Dust echoes 2

The second story I've chosen is the Bat and the Butterfly story. Basically it's about a hunter who first of all seem very successful and popular among the people in the same tribe. He is hunting and supporting the others, just like any other hunter in a tribe. Suddenly he flips around, though, and kidnaps the daughter of the tribe leader and takes her to a cave. During their time in the cave she constantly tries to escape but fails. The tribe locates the cave where the girl is held hostage but they can't get to her because of the really aggressive kidnapper. Due to some intense praying and former goodness of deeds, I guess, the girl suddenly turns into a butterfly and manage go fly away from him. Because of his bad behavior and bad manner the man turns into a bat who tries to catch the butterfly. But she reaches the daylight before he could catch her, so she escapes! And he is doomed to a life in the cave!

What I think this is all about is the "what goes around comes around" phenomenon. If you want to live a rich and fulfilling life you have to be a good citizen and a caring fellow human being. You have to show others respect and be one in the group - not just do as you want to, and then expect others to have fortitude with it.

I think the understood meaning of this story is that you should obey the law, you should not take it in your own hands. You will have to pay for your actions! And also I believe that they are trying to describe that if you are a good fellow, meaning no harm to others, and don't make stupid actions you also will be rewarded when you least expect it. In ways you never would have dreamt of.

Not saying that you would win a couple of millions on the lottery or become famous over a night. No, I mean that if you are living a life without doing well-aware stupid decisions or actions they believe that you will be rewarded spiritually, mentally or even so - physically.

This story has a clear and understandable sense of morality, which I believe is easy to get. Even though they're not using words it's easy to get the message. And it's an important message, so it's absolutely great that they've done a dream song about this topic!

Dust echoes

The first story I chose was the Mermaid story. It is about an elderly song man who leaves his family/tribe for a walkabout excursion. After a while of walking he comes to a waterfall, where he is being pulled down into the water by three mermaids. Somehow he manages to survive under the water surface and lives happily with the mermaids. Or at least up until the day he can't stand the homesickness anymore. He misses his family too much, so even though he's not uncomfortable with the life that the mermaids is living he decides to go home. To yet again gain a peace in his soul and mind.

I think that the story tells us that wherever you are, right now, you will always have roots. You will always have a family you belong to (though it may not be your biological one... though they might not be physically alive). Let's put it like this: You will always have memories of your past - good and bad ones!!

I really feel that I can refer to this story a lot. Especially right now when I'm in Australia without my family, without my roots, without my childhood environment, without all my relatives, without my lovely friends (having one with he though! The best!! Lucky me!). The first month that passed really just flowed through - there were so many new things to do, see, arrange and handle - so there was really like no time left to think about where I were or what I've decided to do.

But now, as I'm starting to get some routines, I feel that I've started to realize. But I think it's a natural step though - once you get routines with school, exercises, more friends, weekends, weekdays.. Yeah, you know the drill - when you're developing your own everyday life here - you get time to think things through. Just like the man in the story! It takes a while.... But then you realize what you had and you miss it!

But (!) I would not do as the man in the story though - go back home. But, after all, I do not have a family, I do not have a crying child longing for me, I'm not a tribe leader or anything like that.. So, I totally understand why he had to get back. Why the homesickness became too much for him. He really, really had a place where he belonged but he gave it up, and then he decides to come back again. Happy ending!

Hopefully they lived happily ever after...

Inspirational print jobs

There are a lot of designers that do artwork that appeals to me. There is one studio, though, that I fancy a little bit more than others. Or, at least, others that I've so far discovered. Maybe, with some further research, I will find a new one - but that's a part of life I guess. As you go on, open-minded and not afraid of the new and upcoming, you will always find new influences and new inspirations. How lovely isn't that? A great deal if you ask me!

A favorite quote of mine is the one spoken by Albert Einstein "The only source of knowledge is experience." And that is very true, don't you think? Especially when it comes to the design industry due to all the differences between the designers and their work. It takes a lot of research, a lot of "getting out there, getting dirty" and the will of being under a constant development to become a designer I think. So, as of right now - due to my research so far I can give you this:

The design studio that I mentioned before is the Boheem Design Studio, that actually is situated very close to us - in Surry Hills. The director Claire Bonnor and her crew does amazing designs when it comes to print designs. Or, at least that is MY point of view of course.

They do simple and logic yet not boring designs. Not too much. But neither too little going on. Especially I like their work for Lexus, General Pants Group, Arrowfield, Sony Foundation Australia and the High Tea Party.

As you can see there is alot of clean and clear designs in these print jobs. A lot of typography as well, which absolutely is one of my passions when it comes to designing.
I really have to say that I get a lot of inspirations from these designs and feel eager to do my own print jobs in the future. Editorial designs and print jobs is what I'm aiming for, so I guess that is why I fell so in love with the portfolio of Boheem Design.

9th of November - Sculptures by the sea

This sculpture is named Earth fish and is created by Daniel Wallwork.

For me, the photo of this sculpture makes me want to really check it out. I want to touch it, see the colors in real life and discover what's behind - how the sculpture looks from behind, if there is something there? If it is the same color and texture on the back as in the front?

What really attracts me by this sculpture is the colors, they are well combined without having any kind of pattern nor color palette. There is a certain calm feeling gained when you look at the colors. There is no chaotic color destroying the peace, there is no colors not working with each other neither is there any color taking over. Even though there is a lot of gray the other colors helps to prevent any kind of boring feeling.

Also the texture it self creates curiosity. It looks like it would be some kind of metallic material, but it can also be plastic or laminate. Can't really tell. Tomorrow, when we're visiting the Sculptures by the sea exhibition, I'll find out though..

The name of the sculpture is Earth fish, which makes me think about a shark fin. Really cool recreation of a shark fin! Not something you've seen before, at least nothing I've seen before. And most importantly - nothing you would ever think of creating the first thing in the morning, which I think is important if you're going to create a successful, diverse and original exhibition.

I'm excited to see the rest of the sculptures tomorrow. A lot of them seemed really cool and you can really tell that there is a creativity involved. Im sure it will be a great day full of inspiration!

What is an designer?

Due to the fact that I just started exploring the enormous world of design it’s hard for me to specify what kind of design philosophy I have. I really do believe, though, that it is important not to let yourself take a sneak-peek at one particular field and then decide that yes – that’s me. Of course you can do this after a while, but as in my position – at beginner level number one – I think it’s good to maintain an open-minded approach to all the different kinds of styles and areas you might come across.

I do, though, have some fields and kinds of designs that have caught my attention quite a bit more than others. I can’t deny that. For example great editorial things, especially typography, really fascinate me. I adore words and letters, I love to do crazy constellations with them and enjoy the fact that there are a millions of possibilities only within typography. I love to play dress-up with words - making the fonts complete each other, exploring with different sizes to create or minimize space.

Often in my creations and designs you’ll find out that I believe that less is more. I do not enjoy being haunted by many different colors or things in every corner of the design. I love clean, structured and simple designs. Not simple as in boring though! Maybe that’s why I’m so in love with words, letters and sentences – you can make a piece of design interesting without making it too much or over-done.

What I have to really work on, though, is to dare to explore different kinds of styles within this field – and other fields – so that I don’t get stuck in one kind of design track. I feel that I’m kind of contradictive when it comes to what I believe design and creativeness should be and what I do myself. Which clearly is something I’ll have to work on.

Even though I think a certain style or a certain layout is representing my thoughts of what “good designing is” it doesn’t hurt to take other influences in remembrance. I was really inspired by our Portfolio skills lecturer Paul Devonshire when he told us about the importance of doing a lot of drafts, sketches, thumbnails and scribbles – so you don’t stop at your first vision or idea. Even though you might believe it would really work and is certainly what your client is after – it doesn’t have to be the other way around. Your client may hate it!

That matter of a fact was really a wake-up call for me. It really makes sense. And since a designers biggest pursue is to create a delighted and willing-to-come-back clientele you really get the importance of this matter. From now and on I really will get my brain cells working – not just one time, not just a second time... Neither a third, a fourth, a fifth, a sixth or a seventh time. No!  From now and on I really understand that it is a great deal of the work to do a good research, then brainstorm and then take all of your ideas in caution until your brain can’t pop any new.

Speaking of inspiration I found myself, a couple of days ago (today it is Thursday the 4th of Nov), having another of those wake-up call moments. It was when our lecturer in Computer skills, Simon Harris, told us that the Pen tool skills is just like going to the gym – we look better the more we practice. First I thought he was just being crazy by comparing us in the gym and us practicing the Pen tool for the same reason – to look better. But with some afterthoughts I find it very, very true. It makes me look better if I practice the Pen tool.  It doesn’t only make the graphic, design or logotype look better – it makes me look better as well, since the production of whatever-it-may-be represents me. It represents me and I have my name in connection to it, which is a designer’s recognition tool. A great piece of art results in a positive boost of your name.

As of right now I am really, really eager to start working on every coming project. It’s going to be so much fun. Never thought I could be so inspired and willing to study as I am right now. Actually I don’t even get the fact that I’m here in Sydney, yet….
